Healthy Ageing (Longevity)
Menopause & Longevity
Menopause is not only a time of symptoms; it is a time when women’s health is reassessed for the long term and healthy ageing (longevity) is planned.
Topics assessed
- Perimenopause
- Menopause
- Postmenopause
- Assessment of menopausal symptoms
- Hormone treatment counselling
- Bone health
- Cardiometabolic health
- Sexual health
- Sleep and quality of life
- Body composition
- Healthy weight management
- Healthy ageing (longevity)
Limits and evidence
- Hormone therapy is not recommended as a way of preventing chronic disease.1,9
- Hormone therapy does not prevent dementia; when given at the onset of menopause, it has also not been shown to harm cognitive function.11
- Menopause is not a disease; the approach is high-quality information, shared decision-making and empathetic care.8
- Pharmacy-compounded “bioidentical” hormone mixtures are not recommended.1

Genital Aesthetics, Vaginal & Sexual Health
Vaginal health, sexual health and genital aesthetics: function, comfort and quality of life, in privacy and confidence.
Topics assessed
- Vaginal dryness and vaginal health concerns
- Postnatal genital concerns
- Information about genital aesthetic procedures
- Labiaplasty
Limits and evidence
- Vaginal laser: a placebo (sham)-controlled study found no advantage over placebo for menopause-related vaginal symptoms; the FDA has not approved these devices for these purposes. It is discussed after evidence-based first-line treatments, with its limitations explained.3,5
- Labiaplasty: there is wide variation in external genital anatomy and most appearances are normal; the possibility of pain, bleeding, infection, scarring, change in sensation and repeat surgery is explained before the procedure.1
With any surgical or interventional procedure, results may vary from person to person. It is recommended that you obtain a detailed opinion from your doctor before the procedure.
